Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Alberta’s Industrial Heartland region (also known as ‘Upgrader Alley’) is one of North America’s largest petro-chemical hubs. Covering an area over 200 sq km, this region is set to build 12 new bitumen upgrader and refinery plants, four of which (North West Upgrading, Petro-Canada’s Fort Hills Upgrader, Total’s Northern Lights Upgrader and Suncor) are planned just 6km south of the Town of Redwater. With billions of dollars in capital investments and a large work force of over 12,000 required to build these mega-scale projects, the next 10-15 years will bring rapid growth to the area’s surrounding municipalities.
